‘India L Black’ outdoor dining table by RIPA

India L, designed by Marco Ripa for studio RIPA, does not quite belong to the outdoor furniture world as we know it. Its rectangular top, set upon a recycled aluminium base, withstands the elements without ever losing its composure, whether rain settles over a Parisian terrace or the sun beats down on a garden in the South. The legs, with their generous curves, lend the whole piece an almost hand-drawn quality, far removed from the overly clean lines of mass-produced furniture.

The top separates from the base. A client who has grown tired of their colour can return it to the RIPA workshop, where it is reworked and reintroduced into circulation, before a new top is fitted onto the same base. The table is reconfigured as preferences evolve, whether on a terrace, in a courtyard, or in a garden.

Each table comes from the Italian workshop, where the metal is bent, sanded, and assembled with unmatched rigour.

The RIPA World

Marco Ripa regards metal as a living material, capable of engaging with time. This distinctive relationship to the material owes much to the sculptures of Alexander Calder, and to their treatment of colour and volume in space. This inspiration runs through the entire India collection, conceived as an outdoor architecture that moves with the seasons rather than withstanding them.
